Senator Hassan is appalled by the decision by the Supreme Court to overturn Roe vs. Wade.
“This is an evisceration of a fundamental right that women have; the right to make their own healthcare decisions; the right to be considered true and equal citizens in a democracy.”
In an interview with WGIR’s with Chris Ryan, Senator Maggie Hassan reacts to the report that the Supreme Court has decided to strike down the Roe vs. Wade decision; suggests legislative ways to protect abortion rights; and explains whether her campaign ads show her distancing herself from President Biden.
Late on Monday night, it was leaked that the Supreme Court may strike down its nearly 50-year-old ruling which established the constitutional right to an abortion, Roe vs. Wade. The leaked document, which is a draft decision written in February by Justice Alito, has been confirmed to be authentic, but it does not represent a decision by the court or the final position of any member on the issues in the case.
News of Roe vs. Wade being overturned has brought pro and anti-abortion protestors to surround the Supreme Court Building and prompted politicians from both sides of the issue to appeal to their respective bases.
Senator Hassan was appalled by this possible decision by the High Court.
“This is an evisceration of a fundamental right that women have; the right to make their own healthcare decisions; the right to be considered true and equal citizens in a democracy.”
Despite the addition of conservative justices to the Supreme Court, Senator Hassan was disappointed by the decision.
“I found it hard to believe that a majority of the justices of the Supreme Court would overturn a longstanding precedent and take what is an extraordinary activist step to undermine the fundamental rights of half of our population.”
With the possibility of abortion rights being no longer guaranteed by the Supreme Court, Senator Hassan is hopeful that pressure can now be applied to passing the Women’s Health Protection Act. The bill, which was passed by the House of Representatives but narrowly defeated in the Senate in February, would codify abortion rights nationally.
Recently, Senator Hassan has been running TV ads where she has stated that she has taken on her party and President Biden by calling again for a federal gas tax holiday and to release more of our emergency oil reserves.
In the last segment of the interview, the Senator explained that she isn’t necessarily running away from the President.
“I’m running for the people of New Hampshire. Granite Staters are really struggling at the gas pump. They’re struggling with inflation. They need to make sure that there is an independent voice in the Senate, and that’s what I have always strived to be.”
