Governor Christie says we can do better than Biden and Trump in 2024. Both men are in decline, and about Trump, “I think his behavior and his ability to control his behavior raises real concerns. We don’t need a president who is focused on vendetta and vindictiveness for the past.”
WGIR’s Chris Ryan and Dean Spiliotes, a political science professor at Southern New Hampshire University, speak with Chris Christie who was a 2016 Republican presidential candidate and former New Jersey Governor and is a possible presidential candidate in 2024. Governor Christie discusses how the Biden Administration caused inflation and Democratic Party policies have caused a rise in the crime rate in our cities; offers solutions to our rising crime rate; assesses US policy with regards to Ukraine; talks about Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and his battle with Disneyworld; and declares that America can do better than Biden or Trump in 2024.
The current high rate of inflation, according to Governor Christie, can be attributed to the $1.9 trillion Rescue Act which was passed last March. He feels that it was unnecessary and contributed to the excessive government spending which was well before the war in Ukraine.
Governor Christie believes that another contributing factor to inflation would be the Biden energy policies, especially his canceling of oil drilling leases at the start of his term. As a result, Biden has made us dependent on foreign oil.
“It is only because of Joe Biden’s radical environmental agenda—where somehow, it’s better for the environment to import a barrel of oil from Russia or Saudi Arabia than to produce one from North Dakota.”
The blame for the surge in crime is given by Governor Christie to the entire Democratic Party for supporting the defund the police movement in 2019-2020 and the lenient policies of many city district attorneys.
Governor Christie, who served as the US Attorney for the District of New Jersey, favors criminal justice reform, improved training for police officers in violence de-escalation techniques, and community policing. However, he also believes in jailing violent criminals.
With regards to US policy with Ukraine, Governor Christie feels that we have been sending Vladimir Putin mixed messages. When George W. Bush allowed Russia to invade Georgia in 2008, when Obama let him absorb Crimea, and when Biden didn’t help to arm the Ukrainians before the invasion, Putin got the wrong idea that the US was okay with his plans for expansion.
Governor Christie does support the Biden Administration’s current plan to provide Ukraine with defensive weapons, but he feels that Putin will not be willing to negotiate unless the Ukrainians inflict more losses on the Russians.
Florida’s Governor Ron DeSantis gets criticism from Governor Chris Christie for using government to go after the Disney Corporation’s special legal status after it opposed the passing of the Parental Rights in Education Act.
“I don’t understand people who are sore winners. The law that he wanted passed, was passed.”
In the final segment of the interview, Governor Christie calls into question whether Joe Biden or Donald Trump should be their party’s candidate in 2024. The Governor feels that President Biden is in decline and is protected from the media by his staff.
Chris Christie believes that President Trump is also in decline.
