Senator Shaheen calls for increased gun control, especially background checks, “We need to continue to look for ways to keep guns out of the hands of those people who shouldn’t have them.”

In an interview with WGIR’s Chris Ryan and UNH Professor Dante Scala, Senator Jeanne Shaheen gives her assessment of the war in Ukraine; considers whether President Biden’s request for a 3% increase in defense spending will be adequate; discusses projects in New Hampshire which will be funded with $70 million in Congressionally Directed Spending; and addresses possible gun control measures by Congress, especially ghost guns.

Senator Shaheen is outraged by brutal way that Russia has conducted war against its neighbor and calls for continued military and humanitarian aid to Ukraine, tighter sanctions on Russia, and support for our NATO allies. She also advocates reducing Europe’s dependence on Russian oil and natural gas by finding other petroleum sources in the short term.

Accelerating the conversion to wind and solar energy and efficiency would be the long-term solution which the Senator advocates to decrease our dependence on fossil fuels and to address climate change.

President Biden has requested a 3% increase in defense spending. In an Armed Services Committee Hearing, Senator Shaheen asked the Secretary of Defense if, in light of increased support for Ukraine, there was enough money in the budget. Secretary Austin said that there probably was not, so the Senator believes that the amount will be increased.

Senator Shaheen is pleased that $70 million in federal dollars from Congressionally Directed Spending, which used to be called ear marked spending, will be used to benefit programs in the Granite State.

Senator Shaheen mentioned the following projects: St. Anselm’s College and CMC-Catholic Medical Center will launch a program to train healthcare workers; expanded nursing services at Colby Sawyer College; and funding for police equipment in Keene.

In the final segment of the interview, Senator Shaheen discusses the need for greater gun control, especially in light of the increased use of ghost guns. These untraceable guns which are usually assembled by the user have frustrated law enforcement because they have no serial numbers and, as such, are untraceable.

“We need to continue to look for ways to keep guns out of the hands of those people who shouldn’t have them.”
