Prior to the game between the Boston Celtics and the Miami Heat on Wednesday, WGIR’s Chris Ryan talked with Duncan Robinson, who is from Portsmouth, New Hampshire, about his journey from the Granite State to the NBA.

Growing up, Duncan Robinson, who is known for his outside shooting, was a Boston fan and patterned his game after Celtics star, Ray Allen. Playing in the NBA for the Miami Heat is the realization of his childhood dreams, but he shares how difficult it is stay there.

Duncan Robinson grew up in the little town of New Castle, which is the smallest and easternmost town in New Hampshire. It consists of a group of islands near Portsmouth Harbor. His sixth-grade class consisted of four students.

Rye Junior High School was Duncan’s next stop; then Governor’s Academy in Massachusetts, where he improved his game; and a post high school graduate year was spent back in New Hampshire at Phillips Exeter Academy.

Robinson opened the eyes of many college recruiters with his outstanding play for the Ephs of Division III, Williams College in Williamstown, MA. It was during his three solid years at the University of Michigan that Duncan Robinson realized that playing in the NBA was a possibility.

After graduation in 2018, Robinson wasn’t taken in the NBA Draft, but he signed to play for the Miami Heat Summer League and their NBA G League team. Robinson had his NBA debut on October 15, 2018. At this point in his career, Duncan Robinson, a deadly three-point shooter and scrappy defender, considers himself to be a role player.

Duncan Robinson says that Matt Bonner from Concord, NH and the San Antonio Spurs is the best player to come out of the Granite State.

“That’s Matt’s crown to take and hold onto. He paved the way for me. He’s a legend.”

Robinson believes that Matt Bonner and he getting to the NBA from New Hampshire shows that it’s difficult but not impossible.

In the final segment of the interview, Duncan Robinson talks about how he returns to the New Hampshire seacoast every summer to visit friends and family and shares his favorite beach, Pirate’s Cove, and favorite restaurant, Street.
