Maggie Hassan says that the increased prices at the pump are caused by pandemic related supply chain issues and the war in Ukraine not by energy policies put forward by her or the Biden Administration.

In an interview with WGIR’s Chris Ryan, Senator Maggie Hassan discusses and defends her call for a suspension of the 18-cent federal gas tax; advocates repurposing the tax breaks which are given to big oil companies to build and maintain the infrastructure needed for electric vehicles; and assesses the war in Ukraine and President Biden’s apparent call for regime change in Russia.

Senator Hassan stands by her proposed 18-cent per gallon federal gas tax holiday until the end of 2022, despite claims from her opponents that this is just a reelection gimmick.

“It has really been kind of remarkable to hear my opponents parrot the agenda of big oil.”

The Senator went on to claim that big oil is making windfall profits which have been used to buy back the stocks. The increased value of the stocks then enrich the executives of the oil companies.

The increased prices at the pump, the Senator asserts, are caused by pandemic related supply chain issues and the war in Ukraine not by energy policies put forward by her or the Biden Administration. Senator Hassan declares that the windfall profits which oil companies have accrued should be taxed accordingly.

On the other hand, the Senator would like to incentivize the oil companies to increase domestic production while making the United States makes a transition to a clean energy economy. In the meantime, big oil should be drilling in the areas where they have thousands of unused drilling permits.

Senator Hassan favors taking away the tax breaks which the government gives to the oil companies and using the money to build up the infrastructure needed for electric vehicles. As a long-term goal, the United States would be energy independent and the world leader in clean energy technology.

In regard to the war in Ukraine, Senator Hassan calls for the United States to continue supporting the freedom loving people of Ukraine with weapons and humanitarian aid. She calls Vladimir Putin a war criminal and calls this Putin’s War. About President Biden’s prayer about removing the Russian leader, the Senator said, ”All Americans share the President’s outrage at Putin’s unconscionable war.”
