Referring to President Trump and his supporters, Governor Christie says, “If we’re only talking about yesterday, if we’re dwelling on the past, and we make it all about ourselves, rather than about the country as a whole, then the American people are not going to trust us to turn the government over to us again.”
In an interview with WGIR’s Chris Ryan, 2016 Republican presidential candidate and former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie leaves the door open about his being a presidential candidate in 2024; discusses the steps which the Republican Party must take to be successful in 2022 and 2024; talks about his support of Trump’s candidacy in 2016; expresses his differences with President Trump about the 2020 election being stolen; explains why each election is the most important election; weighs in on how he would have handled the Ukraine crisis differently than President Biden; and lays out his “all of the above” energy plan.
Governor Christie made the featured presentation at Monday’s installment in the “Politics & Eggs” speaker series at Saint Anselm College. Over the years, the “Politics & Eggs” forum has launched the campaigns of many presidential campaigns.
When he was asked if he was actually a 2024 candidate, Christie neither confirmed nor denied his candidacy, but it sounded like he was interested in making a run.
For the Republican Party to make gains and take advantage of missteps by President Biden and the Democrats, Governor Christie believes that must show that they have a vision of the future and that they are concerned about the issues which the voters are worried about.
With a veiled reference to President Trump, Governor Christie said, “If we’re only talking about yesterday, if we’re dwelling on the past, and we make it all about ourselves, rather than about the country as a whole, then the American people are not going to trust us to turn the government over to us again.”
In the 2016 Presidential Race, Governor Christie withdrew his own candidacy and worked very actively to get Donald Trump elected. Despite their current differences, the Governor explains why he has no regrets.
“It was clear to me that he was going to be the nominee. My goal then became clear to me that under no circumstances that Hillary Rodham Clinton become president of the United States.”
Governor Christie is critical of President Trump’s claims that the 2020 election was stolen.
“We can’t be justifying an American President saying that the election was stolen when there is no evidence that it was. That undercuts everyone’s faith and confidence in our electoral system.”
Because of America’s role as the leader of the free world, Governor Christie believes that every election is the most important election. He asserts that Vladimir Putin sensed weakness and then decided to invade Ukraine.
Governor Christie criticizes President Biden for not providing weapons to Ukraine sooner; for not providing them aggressively now; and for not allowing Poland to ship them MiG fighter jets. Christie would also send a clear message to Xi Jinping that China will suffer economically if it aids Russia.
In the last portion of the interview, Governor Christie lays out an “all of the above” energy program which would be built around energy independence using fossil fuels and nuclear energy. While providing consumers with affordable energy sources, we would continue to work toward clean energy sources.
