Governor Sununu isn’t as optimistic about the 2022 elections as some Republican forecasters.
“Republicans need to work hard in 2022. I don’t think that it’s going to be a layup like some people think it is. . .This idea that the Republicans are going to have a windfall of votes, I don’t buy it.”
In an interview with WGIR’s Chris Ryan, New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu discusses the importance of political speeches like last night’s Presidential State of the Union Speech; assesses the delivery and content of President Biden’s address; reacts to his being listed as one of the top ten Republican presidential candidates in 2024; predicts what will happen in the 2022 midterm elections; and comments on the impact of Ukrainian President Zelensky’s leadership.
Governor Sununu feels that political speeches can be an effective way for leaders to communicate and to rally people to a cause. In recent years, however, we have become so polarized and social media has been a big factor in how a speech is received.
President Biden’s State of the Union Speech, in the Governor’s opinion, struck the right tone in the beginning where he was rallying the American people to support Ukraine and in the conclusion which had a pro-American theme. However, in the middle, he felt that the President seemed to be lacking details.
“At the end of the day, there’s a lot of rose-colored glasses on an economy that people are really feeling. There’s a reason why you’ve got a 40% approval rating, Buddy. To not acknowledge that was a little missing.”
The Washington Post listed the top ten Republican 2024 Presidential Candidates, and Governor Chris Sununu came in at #9. The Governor was flattered to be recognized, but he deflected it as an acknowledgement of what New Hampshire has accomplished.
The Governor believes that an improving economy and another COVID surge in the next few years will be big factors in the 2022 and 2024 elections.
President Zelensky of Ukraine has emerged as an outstanding leader during a desperate time for his country. Governor Sununu praises Zelensky’s courage, but the Governor isn’t sure that there the Ukrainian President’s example will have an effect on how we select our leaders.
