Senator Cory Booker on the New Hampshire Primary:

“As one of the small numbers of black people who have run for president, I actually really appreciated the New Hampshire warmth and community and how they honor their role as the first in the nation primary, and I think that that should stay.”

In an interview with WGIR’s Chris Ryan, New Jersey Senator and former 2020 Presidential candidate, Cory Booker discusses whether America is headed in the right direction; makes the case for passage of the Build Back Better Plan; in a time of political rancor, expresses the need for cooperation; reflects on the lessons learned from his 2020 presidential race; answers questions about a possible run for president in 2024; and gives his wholehearted support for New Hampshire remaining as the first in the nation presidential primary.

Senator Booker believes that the Biden-Harris Administration is doing an outstanding job in restarting our economy after the COVID shutdown. The Senator cites record job creation statistics as proof.

“The Biden-Harris Administration has created three times as many jobs, on their short watch, as the last three Republican presidencies combined.”

In addition, the Senator points to a healthy 5% growth rate; the child tax credit has cut childhood poverty in half; consumer debt has been cut in half; and unemployment insurance claims are at their lowest point in 50 years.

Price increases, according to Senator Booker, have been caused by increased demand and that their effect for middle class families have been offset by tax cuts. The Senator also believes that the passage of the infrastructure bill is cause for optimism.

The Senator gives credit to the leadership of Senators Hassan and Shaheen for their work toward passage of the Build Back Better Plan which will be a tremendous benefit for middle class families by extending the child tax credit and by lowering the cost of childcare, eldercare, and healthcare.

During his presidential bid in 2020, Senator Cory Booker emphasized a message of love triumphing over hate. Despite a current climate of political hostility, the Senator still believes that cooperation and achieving common goals is possible.

As an example of bipartisan cooperation, Senator Booker discusses working with Republican Senator Chuck Grassley. Together they were able to get unanimous passage of a bill to provide survivor’s benefit coverage to first responders who died from COVID.

To bring about a change in the political climate the Senator encourages people to perform acts of kindness toward those who hate or have a different point of view.

Senator Booker dispels any speculation that his being the keynote speaker at “McIntyre-Shaheen and Eleanor Roosevelt Winter Extravaganza” in New Hampshire on Saturday, December 11is an indication that he is considering a run for president in 2024.

“I am excitedly supporting Biden-Harris in 2024. They have already proved in their first year that they are some of the most productive president and vice-presidential teams in the history of America.”

The Senator is very thankful for the many relationships which he made when he campaigned here in 2020, and he considers New Hampshire to be a hinge state in national politics. For that reason, he accepted the invitation to speak at the Democratic fundraiser.

In the final segment of the interview, Senator Booker expressed his full support for the Granite State continuing as the First in the Nation Presidential Primary despite its lack of diversity.

“There is something special about the New Hampshire tradition that I honor. As one of the small numbers of black people who have run for president, I actually really appreciated the New Hampshire warmth and community and how they honor their role as the first in the nation
