Chris Ryan: Sununu Shocks Political Establishment, Won't Run For Senate

By Chris Ryan

For months, Governor Chris Sununu took New Hampshire political observers on a ride. The destination appeared to be Washington D.C., but we actually just went in a circle back to Concord.

As we looked out the window and listened to him speak, he appeared to be setting the stage for a run for U.S. Senate against Maggie Hassan.

Sununu talked a lot about what was wrong in Washington, how our delegation was letting us down, how DC could use NH values. He traveled to meet big national donors. He took calls from the GOP's most significant figures in the U.S. Senate. He enjoyed the bright TV lights of appearances on Fox News and CNN.

What's one thing he didn't do?

Express a desire to actually be a U.S. Senator.

I've been talking to Sununu about this topic for years, and he always hated the idea of being in the Senate. The dude is restless. He wants to accomplish things, not debate them only to see nothing happen.

Now, many a politician has claimed that they could be the difference. They would be the change agent!

Sununu looked down the barrel of the Washington DC political culture and said, 'This is screwed, no one person can change'.

Part of me loves the candor, part of me thinks we need restless independent thinkers to turn the tide.

But, at the end of the day, I think it's admirable to be able to look hard at something that everyone says you should do, determine it's not the best thing for you, and say no.

Governor Sununu will join me tomorrow at 8:08a on "New Hampshire Today" to offer more insight into his decision.
