Governor Sununu Continues to Mull a Run for the U.S. Senate

In an interview with Chris Ryan and Justin McIsaac, New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu discusses his meeting with Vice President Kamala Harris on her recent visit to the Granite State, talks about a lack of communication with the Biden Administration, analyzes the recent rise in his approval rating, and outlines what will be in his Best Practices Reopening Guidelines for Businesses which is due on May 7.

On Friday, April 23, the Vice President landed in New Hampshire to promote the Biden Administration’s $2 trillion infrastructure plan. Governor Sununu described their meeting as cordial, but he apparently didn’t get any useful feedback from VP Harris about when the state will get guidance from the federal government about how to spend the trillions of dollars which have already been allocated as part of COVID relief by Congress.

Governor Sununu continues to complain about a lack of communication from the Biden Administration which is combined with a lack of flexibility.

“The Administration, as a whole, does not communicate well; and they really have a Washington first attitude. They don’t give states flexibility like the previous administration.”

The University of New Hampshire Survey Center has reported that Governor Sununu’s approval rating rose from 64% to 69%. When he was asked if this rise would affect his decision to run for the Senate, Governor Sununu is leaving the door open to running against Maggie Hassan in 2022; but he enjoys being governor and feels that he still has much to accomplish in that role.

At some point in the future, Governor Sununu will discuss the situation with his family, weigh his options, and decide about running for the US Senate, running again for Governor, or reentering the private sector.

“Washington is a really tough place. It’s not very pleasant. I know I could do well there, but I don’t know if it would do me well.”

The Governor went on to say that other governors, even Democrats like Governor Cuomo of New York, have voiced discontent with the lack of flexibility and attempts to micromanage from Washington.

Governor Sununu elaborated on what will be in his May 7th Best Practices Guidelines for Reopening Businesses. Basically, the Governor says that the guidelines will be universal for every business from amusement parks to restaurants, and he reiterates that they will be recommendations not requirements. It will be up to the business to determine what is their “Best Practice.”

“We are out of the business of mandates, as it pertains to COVID.”
