Inspector General Sends Criminal Referral Of Andrew McCabe To US Attorney

Andrew McCabe could soon be facing a criminal indictment for allegedly leaking a story to the press and then lying about it to federal investigators and James Comey. According to a report by CNN, the Justice Department's Inspector General sent a criminal referral for McCabe to the U.S. attorney’s office in Washington.

The move comes the same day that a group of Republican lawmakers sent a similar request to the Justice Department and FBI asking for an investigation into James Comey, Andrew McCabe, ex-Attorney General Loretta Lynch and Hillary Clinton.

The criminal referral stems from a recent report from the Office of Inspector General that found McCabe "lacked candor" when speaking with officials, including Comey, about a leaked story that "effectively confirmed the existence" of the FBI's investigation into the Clinton Foundation to the Wall Street Journal. The report found that McCabe leaked the story to "to advance his personal interests at the expense of Department leadership."

McCabe was fired by Attorney General Jeff Sessions less than two days before he was eligible for full retirement benefits.
