New Hampshire Today: Interview with Dr. Benjamin Chan

In an interview with Chris Ryan, the New Hampshire State Epidemiologist, Dr. Benjamin Chan, discusses the recent downward trends of COVID infections and fatalities in the Granite State, predicts whether our state will be able to meet the vaccination targets set by President Biden, explains how he applies CDC-Centers for Disease Control guidelines, weighs in on the future of mask wearing, and explains what precautions vaccinated persons, even older adults with health concerns, should follow.

In spite of the progress which has been made, Dr. Chan encourages everyone to continue wearing well-fitted masks, to practice social distancing, and avoid large group gatherings due to there still being a significant amount of COVID infection out there.

President Biden said that all adults will be able to be vaccinated by May 1st. Dr. Chan believes that meeting that target is doable, but it is dependent on the Federal government maintaining a steady supply of vaccine.

As the State Epidemiologist, Dr. Chan interprets the guidance which come from the CDC-Centers for Disease Control and determines how their guidance which is intended for the whole country should be applied to a small state like New Hampshire.

According to Dr. Chan, wearing masks and social distancing will continue even after most people have been vaccinated.

The CDC and Dr. Chan recommend that all individuals who have been vaccinated—regardless of their age or health conditions--should continue to wear a face mask and maintain social distancing when they are out in public.

However, the new CDC guidance does allow for an older adult with medical conditions, who has been fully vaccinated, to meet in a home with other vaccinated persons or with family members without face masks or social distancing. If an individual is still nervous about COVID infection, Dr. Chan recommends to still wear a mask.
