Carolina Panthers Fire Head Coach Ron Rivera

Washington Redskins v Carolina Panthers

The Carolina Panthers fired head coach Ron Rivera with four games left in the season. Defensive backs coach Perry Fewell was named as the interim head coach.

“I believe this is the best decision for the long-term success of our team,” Panthers owner David Tepper said in a statement. “I have a great deal of respect for Ron and the contributions he has made to this franchise and to this community. I wish him the best. I will immediately begin the search for the next head coach of the Carolina Panthers.”

The Panthers are currently 5-7 and basically out of playoff contention after losing four straight games, including their most recent loss to the Washington Redskins. Two of those losses were to their division rivals, the New Orleans Saints and the Atlanta Falcons.

Rivera coached the Panthers since 2011 and had a regular-season record of 76-36-1. He also led them to Super Bowl 50 in 2015, which they lost to the Denver Broncos. In the playoffs, Rivera had a 3-4 record.

Tepper also said that the team will be hiring a new assistant general manager and vice president of football operations.

“We are going to take a comprehensive and thorough review of our football operation to make sure we are structured for long-term sustained success,” Tepper said. “Our vision is to find the right mix of old-school discipline and toughness with modern and innovative processes. We will consider a wide range of football executives to complement our current football staff. "
