Wisconsin Bus Driver Rescues Two Kids Wandering Coatless In Frigid Weather

A bus driver in Wisconsin is being hailed as a hero after she rescued two young children who were walking down the street without coats on a cold, snowy morning. Nicole Chamberlain was on her regular route through Waukesha, which is about 18 miles from Milwaukee, when she saw two kids who were not dressed for the weather, walking down the snow-covered road. The temperature outside was 18 degrees and the wind chill was a bone-chilling three degrees.

The young girl, who was just two years old, was wearing only a t-shirt and a diaper, though she did have on boots. Her brother, who was six, had on a pair of pants and a t-shirt.

“Neither one of them had a coat on, and they were headed towards a busy intersection,” Chamberlain told WISN-TV. “I knew there was no school bus stop down there or a school, so I knew right away I had to pull over and help them.”

Chamberlain brought the kids inside the bus and put her coat over the young girl's bare legs. The kids told her they were looking for their grandmother, and Chamberlain promised to help them find her.

While police officers were gathering information at the scene, the family of the children came over and were relieved to see the two young kids were safe.

"They saw all the commotion and came over to the bus, and there we were with the kids," said Chamberlain.

The children's grandmother explained that she had gone down into the basement, and when she came back upstairs, she noticed the two youngsters had wandered off.

Chamberlain told WITI-TV that is glad that the kids are safe.

"I'm just thrilled I was in the right place and right time, but even more thrilled, the situation turned out to be even better than what you hear sometimes," Chamberlain said. "They went back; they were with a happy family. They were safe. That was most important to me."
